About the course
This free online course offers the opportunity to learn Turkish, known as Türkçe, which is the native language of approximately 83 million people. Also known as Anatolian Turkish or Istanbul Turkish, it is the most widely spoken of the Turkish languages. It is spoken primarily in Turkey and Northern Cyprus, but also in communities in countries such as Greece, Macedonia, Kosovo, and Albania, as well as in several other Eastern European countries. Turkish is also the first or second language of millions of people of Turkish descent in Western Europe, particularly in Germany. The roots of the Turkish language go back to Central Asia, where inscriptions and manuscripts written in the language have been found, estimated to be approximately 1,300 years old. Turkish expanded with the expansion of the Ottoman Empire, becoming the official language of all administrations. In 1927, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the first president of the Turkish Republic, implemented radical administrative and cultural changes, including replacing the Ottoman alphabet with the Latin alphabet, with the aim of standardizing the language and promoting its use. The Turkish Language Association (TDK) was later established to reorganize the language to fit the new alphabet and promote its use in various academic and cultural fields.
