Şırnak Üniversitesi

Şırnak University was founded on May 22, 2008, as a modern public university in the city of Şırnak, located in southeastern Turkey. The university aims to meet the region's higher education needs and promote its academic and research development. It is currently headed by Professor Dr. Abdurrahim Alakçı. The university's proximity to the Iraqi border makes it a popular destination for many international students, particularly those from Arab countries. Adhering to the motto "Preserve Culture and Generations" (Harsı ve nesli koru), the university uses Turkish as the primary language of instruction for its programs. With its diverse learning environment, modern facilities, and highly qualified faculty, Şırnak University plays a vital role in the educational and research advancement of the Southeastern Anatolia region.

Why do students prefer Şırnak Üniversitesi?

Low tuition fees and living costs: Şırnak University is an excellent budget-friendly option. Tuition fees at public universities in this region are already low, and the cost of living in Şırnak is significantly lower compared to major cities like Istanbul and Ankara. This provides a lighter financial burden for students and their families.

Easy admission requirements: One of the most attractive features for Arab students is that the university does not require the YÖS exam for international students in many of its programs, but rather relies primarily on the high school diploma (baccalaureate) grade point average within its selection system. This greatly simplifies the application process.

A familiar social and cultural environment: The university is located in an area with a large Arab and Kurdish population, creating a social environment where Arab students feel culturally connected. This easier social integration helps students from the Arab world adapt quickly and focus on their studies.

Student Exchange Program (Erasmus+): The university participates in the European Erasmus+ student exchange program, which allows eligible students the opportunity to spend a semester or more at one of the partner universities across Europe. This opportunity adds significant value to a student's CV and broadens their academic and cultural horizons.

  • High school diploma (Baccalaureate/Tawjihi): The primary requirement is a high school diploma. It must be validated by the Turkish Ministry of Education or the Turkish Embassy in your country. Admission is primarily based on the applicant's cumulative grade point average (GPA) when comparing applications to the same program.
  • The YÖS exam: Several sources indicate that the university does not require the YÖS exam for admission to many of its programs. However, achieving a good YÖS score may increase your chances of admission, especially to competitive fields.
  • Turkish language proficiency test: All programs are taught in Turkish. TÖMER certificates or passing the university's language test are acceptable. If you do not have a certificate, you may be conditionally admitted and study a preparatory year for the language.
  • Other tests (may be accepted): The university may accept international tests such as the SAT.
