Everything you need to know about scholarships

The purpose of the free scholarships in the UAE is to attract outstanding graduate students in specific disciplines to the United Arab Emirates University and provide them with full and ongoing financial support to pursue their graduate studies. PhD scholarship awards are based on competitive criteria that take into account applicants' qualifications (such as GPA, journal publications, conference presentations, patents, GRE scores, letters of recommendation, etc.) and the university from which they graduated. Applicants are required to submit copies of all their qualifications at the time of application.

Scholarship benefits

  • Adequate monthly stipend: used by the student to cover housing and living expenses.
  • Health insurance: if required.
  • Additional bonus: Approximately AED 3,000 from the supervisor’s external research project or up to AED 2,000 from the supervisor’s internal research project.
  • The scholarship does not cover travel and visa expenses.

Application requirements

  1. Obtain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.5 out of 4 in the master’s program, with evidence of strong academic performance.
  2. Be unemployed or currently unemployed to ensure full dedication to their doctoral studies without conflicting work commitments.
  3. Not to receive grants from any other sources.
  4. Fulfill all requirements specified by the UAEU PhD programme, including academic requirements and research expectations.
  5. Pay the program application fee of 200 AED.
  6. Have conducted previous research projects or completed a thesis related to areas such as renewable energy, transportation, health, water, technology, or space, demonstrating alignment with the thematic focus of the scholarship.
  7. There may be a personal interview.
  8. To comply with all additional eligibility criteria set by the United Arab Emirates University and the specific requirements of the PhD Scholarship Program.

Admission requirements to the United Arab Emirates University (PhD)

  1. Master's degree: in a related major or field from an accredited university recognized by the Ministry of Education in the United Arab Emirates, with a cumulative GPA of no less than 3.0 on a 4.0 scale or equivalent.
  2. Bachelor's degree: in a related major or field from an accredited university recognized by the Ministry of Education in the United Arab Emirates, with a cumulative GPA of no less than 2.5 on a 4.0 scale or equivalent.
  3. English Proficiency Certificate:
    • A minimum IELTS Academic score of 6.5 or equivalent for all disciplines where the primary language of instruction is English or where the dissertation is written in English.
    • The date of obtaining the certificate must not have passed more than two years from the date of application, except in the following cases:
      • Students whose first language is English and who have completed a master's degree at an English-medium university in a country where the official language is English.
      • Students who hold degrees from an English-language university and have achieved an IELTS score of at least 6.0 or equivalent upon enrollment in a Master's program.
    • For programs taught in Arabic, the minimum IELTS score is 5 or equivalent.
  4. Colleges may set additional or higher standards for admission to their doctoral program.

Documents required for application

  1. Official headshot.
  2. A certified copy of the university degree (master's and bachelor's), and a certified copy of the university transcript.
  3. Letter of equivalency (recognition of the certificate) for the previous degree from the Ministry of Education in the United Arab Emirates.
  4. English language proficiency certificate ( IELTS or TOEFL ).
  5. A certificate of Arabic language proficiency is required for admission to a doctoral program in which the language of instruction is Arabic.
  6. Two letters of recommendation.
  7. Curriculum Vitae ( CV ).
  8. A copy of a valid passport.
  9. A copy of the ID card (for residents of the UAE).
  10. A copy of the registration certificate (for UAE nationals only).

Conditions for the continuation of the grant

  1. The student must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.3 or higher during his/her PhD studies.
  2. The student must be registered full-time (no less than 9 credit hours per semester ) during his study period for a doctoral degree.
  3. The student must be a full-time student at the UAE University.
  4. The student must commit to dedicating at least 40 hours per week to academic lectures and research projects throughout the year.
