İzmir Bakırçay Üniversitesi History

Founded on August 20, 2016, via Law No. 6745 (published in Official Gazette No. 29804 on September 7, 2016), IBU was one of four new public universities created to boost regional development in Turkey's Aegean region. Modeled as a "themed" institution under Article 169 of Law No. 2809, it started with 5 faculties, 3 vocational schools, and 3 institutes, focusing on health-tech integration to address İzmir's growing needs in innovation and healthcare.

2016

Establishment as a public university

Establishment as a public university with initial units (Faculty of Arts & Sciences, Law, Economics & Admin Sciences, Engineering & Architecture, Health Sciences; plus vocational schools and institutes).

2018

First academic year

First academic 3year begins with ~850 students; motto "A Special State University" adopted, emphasizing entrepreneurship and R&D.

2019

Medical Faculties Added

Faculty of Medicine added (Cabinet Decision, May 25); Faculty of Pharmacy established (Presidential Decree, December 25); Kınık Health Services Vocational School approved (YÖK, October 10).

Changes and Expansions

Institutes consolidated into the single Institute of Graduate Education (Presidential Decree, March 28); Menemen Vocational School renamed and expanded.

Achieves institutional accreditation

High School Completion?

Must hold a high school diploma (or equivalent) from a recognized institution; science/math track preferred for STEM programs like Medicine/Engineering.

Language Proficiency?

Turkish programs require basic Turkish (TOMER Level B1; free prep year offered); English tracks need TOEFL iBT ≥72 or IELTS ≥5.5 (waivable with English-medium high school).

YÖK Compliance?

Follows Council of Higher Education (YÖK) guidelines for foreign students; no Turkish citizenship or dual-nationality restrictions apply.

Age Minimum?

At least 18 years old by September 2026; no upper limit.

Pharmacy (5 years)

12 international seats; needs TR-YÖS ≥420 or SAT ≥1250 and at least 80% high school GPA.

Computer Engineering(4 years)

15 seats fully in English; TR-YÖS ≥400 or SAT ≥1200 + 75% GPA.

Civil Engineering (4 years)

10 international places; TR-YÖS ≥390 or SAT ≥1150 with minimum 70% GPA.

Law (4 years)

20 seats for foreign students; TR-YÖS ≥400 or SAT ≥1100 and 70% high school average required.

Nursing (4 years)
