Fırat Üniversitesi
Fırat University is one of the oldest government universities in eastern Turkey. Higher education in Elazig dates back to 1967 with the opening of the “Higher Technical School”, then the “Elazig Academy of Engineering and Architecture” was established, and the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine began teaching in 1970, affiliated with Ankara University.
On April 11, 1975, the higher education institutions in Elazığ were consolidated under the umbrella of Fırat University, beginning with three main faculties: Veterinary Medicine, Science, and Arts. It later expanded to include prominent faculties such as Engineering and Medicine, becoming a comprehensive university encompassing health, engineering, humanities, and social sciences. The university emphasizes its contribution to the development of higher education in eastern and southeastern Turkey through the establishment of academic branches in neighboring regions and provinces in the past.
Today, the university is distinguished by its research and laboratory infrastructure, research centers, and international collaborations. The “International Information Package” states that the Turkish Higher Education Council (YÖK) declared it a “research university” by a decision dated December 13, 2021, which reflects its research weight at the national level.

What are the accepted exams and required grades for admission to Firat University?
The university adopts a flexible policy in accepting international students, and the priorities are as follows:
Unified YÖS Exam (TR-YÖS):
- The university accepts TR-YÖS as one of the most important tracks.
- Medicine, dentistry and pharmacy are only accepted through TR-YÖS.
International certifications:
- SAT I: A total score of at least 1000, with the math score being at least 600 out of 800.
- ACT: A score of at least 25 out of 36.
- International A-Levels: A minimum of three ABB courses, with two courses being related to the major; language courses not taught in English will not be counted.
- IB (International Baccalaureate): A minimum total of 28 in subjects relevant to the program.
- AP (Advanced Placement): Passing four AP subjects, with a minimum grade of 3 in each subject.
Note:
- In the second cycle, the option of assessment is also added via the high school diploma/certificate degree (along with the tests) – with the restriction “Medicine/Dentistry/Pharmacy = TR-YÖS only” remaining.
What documents and papers are required for application to Firat University?
Essential documents required (for online application):
- Personal photo.
- A copy of a valid passport.
- High school diploma (baccalaureate) translated into Turkish or English and certified.
- Grade Report: Translated and certified showing grades for all years of high school.
- The TR-YÖS test certificate or one of the mentioned international certificates.
Additional documents (upon final confirmation or for postgraduate studies):
- The international student registration form is printed and signed.
- A printed and completed notification and undertaking form.
- Exam result document (must be verifiable/or certified by the issuing authority).
- Selection/Nomination Result Document
- An equivalence document (Denklik) is required for specific categories.
- A bank receipt proving payment of tuition fees to the declared account.
- General Health Insurance (GSS) policy for international students in Türkiye.
- A TÖMER certificate from Firat University or a certificate from the Yunus Emre Institute; or taking the level/proficiency test conducted by the Turkish Education Center at the university for those who do not have a certificate, and then joining the TÖMER program if the required level is not achieved.
What are the official application dates and selection criteria for Firat University?
First: Official dates (last officially published session for Bachelor's/Diploma – 2025/2026):
First session:
- Application period: June 26, 2025 – July 16, 2025
- Program selection: July 21, 2025 – July 27, 2025
- Results announcement: July 29, 2025
Second session:
- Application period: August 4, 2025 – August 24, 2025
- Program selection: August 28, 2025 – September 3, 2025
- Results announcement: September 5, 2025
Final registration dates after acceptance:
- For residents within Türkiye: August 4, 2025 – August 29, 2025
- For those residing outside of Türkiye: Deadline is November 28, 2025
- Registration is done in person at the Student Affairs Department of the university.
Second: The selection mechanism
- Applications are submitted via an electronic portal (appiso), and during the “application” period only an initial application is submitted, while the selection of the department/program is done during the announced “preferences” period.
- The evaluation of files is done by the Admissions, Evaluation and Selection Committee for International Students, which converts test/certificate scores to a scale of 100 and then ranks candidates according to points, preferences and the country's quota.
- In case of a tie in points: the regulations give priority to the youngest, then the one closest in graduation date, and if the tie persists, a lottery will be held.
- After acceptance: The original documents must be submitted upon final registration, and any forgery/material deficiency will lead to cancellation of registration and loss of student rights.
- The application evaluation fee (in the 2025 cycle) was 600 Turkish Lira and was payable electronically through the application system only.
