Accepted exams and required grades

Important note: International admission requirements for 2026 have not yet been published. The information below is based on general international admission practices at Turkish public universities.


High school diploma (Baccalaureate/Tawjihi): The high school diploma must be validated by the Turkish Ministry of Education or the Turkish Embassy in your country. Admission is primarily based on cumulative grade point average (GPA), and there is usually a minimum requirement (often 70% or higher) that varies depending on the competition for the program.

Turkish Language Proficiency Test (TÖMER or University): All programs are taught in Turkish. A certificate of proficiency (level B2 or C1) from a recognized TÖMER institute is required, or you must pass the language test administered by the university. Conditional admission may be granted, and you may be enrolled in the preparatory language year.

The YÖS exam: Most public universities require the YÖS exam. The university may announce later whether it will accept the central YÖK exam or its own. The required exam score varies each year depending on the applicants' results.

English language tests (for rare English programs): For the few programs that are taught partly or entirely in English (e.g., English Literature), a TOEFL or IELTS score may be required.

  • Official equivalency certificate from the Turkish Directorate of Education: may be required after initial acceptance.
  • Proof of financial capability: Bank statement or letter of guarantee.
  • YÖK Recognition/Equivalence Document: Especially for postgraduate degrees.

Official application dates for international students in 2026 have not yet been announced. Generally speaking:

  • Application period for the fall semester (starts September/October): The application period is usually from April to the end of July.
  • The application period for the spring semester (starts in February): The application period is usually from October to December.
